2004 - 2005 Chevrolet Malibu (New Body Style) Key Programming Instructions

NOTE: This procedure is for the new body-style Malibu only. The old style does not have a transponder system and will not need programming to start the vehicle. These Programming procedures are only good for USA-built vehicles. The first digit of your 17-digit VIN number must start with the number 1 or 4. If your VIN number starts with a 2 or 3 or a letter, these procedures WILL NOT WORK.

1. To program a new key yourself (without having any other working keys) This should have already been cut by a locksmith or qualified individual.
2. Insert a new cut key in the ignition and turn the key to the ON position for 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
3. Within 45 seconds turn the key to OFF and then back to the ON position for 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
4. Within 45 seconds turn the key to OFF and then back to the ON position for 10 minutes and 30 seconds.
5. Turn key OFF then back ON.
6. The key is now programmed.
7. Start the vehicle to test the key.

NOTE: To program a duplicate key that has been cut by a locksmith or qualified individual

1. Insert an existing programmed working key into the ignition cylinder.
2. Turn the ignition to the ON position for 5 seconds, then back to the OFF position.
3. Remove the existing key and within 5 seconds insert a new key and turn it to the ON position for 5 seconds.
4. Turn the key OFF then back to ON.
5. The key is now programmed.
6. Start the vehicle to test the key.
