1998 Ford Contour Key Programming Instructions

NOTE: Before taking any steps please read through all instructions to locate the right set for your vehicle. Depending on the month of your vehicle's production, the programming requirements may be different. If you have a Contour V6 LX model built before February 1998, you can program a new key yourself without having previously cut and programmed keys. If you do not already have a cut, programmed key on hand and if your Contour V6 LX model was built after February of 1998, your new key will need to be cut by a professional prior to programming.

NOTE: For Contours built after March of 1998: You cannot program keys to your vehicle unless you have two, working, programmed keys on hand. If you have one or no current keys, you must go to a locksmith or a dealer to program the key(s) to your vehicle. The key(s) will need to be cut by a professional before programming can occur.

NOTE: Instructions for All Keys Lost

  1. Insert the new key into the ignition and turn it to the on position (as far as you can go without cranking the engine).
  2. The security light on the dash will flash for fifteen minutes.
  3. When the security light stops flashing, turn the ignition off and then back to the on position.
  4. The security light will flash for fifteen more minutes.
  5. When the security light stops flashing, turn the ignition off and then back to the on position.
  6. The security light will flash for fifteen more minutes.
  7. After the security light stops flashing the third time, turn the key to the off position.
  8. Turn the key to the on position and the security light should stop flashing indicating the new key has been programmed.
  9. Start vehicle to test key.

NOTE: If you already have a cut, programmed key for your vehicle and wish to program an additional key to your vehicle, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the existing working key in the ignition and turn to the on position then back to the off position.
  2. Within 5 seconds insert the new key into the ignition and turn to the on position.
  3. The security light will light up for 2 seconds to indicate successful programming.
