1997 Ford Taurus Key Programming Instructions

NOTE: The transponder system was only on SHO & LS models in 1997. To program a new key (with no other working keys), take the key code to a locksmith to have a key made or call a locksmith to come to originate a new working key.

  1. After having a locksmith or qualified professional cut the transponder key, follow these instructions:
  2. Insert the new key into the ignition and turn it to the ON position. ( As far as you can go without a cranking engine )
  3. The security light on the dash will flash for fifteen minutes.
  4. When the security light stops flashing, turn the ignition OFF and then back to the ON position.
  5. The security light will flash for fifteen more minutes.
  6. When the security light stops flashing, turn the ignition OFF and then back to the ON position.
  7. The security light will flash for fifteen more minutes.
  8. After the security light stops flashing the third time turn the key to the OFF position.
  9. Turn the key to the ON position and the security light should stop flashing indicating the new key has been programmed.
  10. Start the vehicle to test the key.

NOTE: To program a second (duplicate) key after having a locksmith or qualified professional cut the transponder key, follow these instructions:

  1. Insert the existing working key in the ignition and turn to the ON position then back to the OFF position.
  2. Within 5 seconds insert a new key in the ignition and turn to the ON position.
  3. The security light will light up for 2 seconds to indicate successful Programming.
  4. Turn the key to the OFF position.
  5. Start a vehicle to test the new key.
