1997 - 2004 Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Oldsmobile, Pontiac Vehicle Key Programming Instructions (Select Models: See Attached List)

NOTE: Verify your vehicle's year, make, and model are on the attached list before attempting these programming instructions on your vehicle.

NOTE: These Programming procedures are only good for USA built vehicles. The first digit of your 17 digit VIN number must start with the number 1 or 4. If your VIN number starts with a 2 or 3 or a letter these procedures WILL NOT WORK.

To program a key that has already been cut to fit your vehicle (without having any other programmed keys)

  1. Insert the new key into the ignition cylinder and turn it to the ON position. (As far as you can go without cranking the engine) The security light on the dash will illuminate and stay on for ten minutes. When the security light goes out, you have one minute to start the next step.
  2. Turn the ignition cylinder to OFF and then back to the ON position. The security light on the dash will illuminate and stay on for ten more minutes. When the security light goes out, you have one minute to start the next step.
  3. Turn the ignition cylinder to OFF and then back to the ON position. The security light on the dash will illuminate and stay on for ten more minutes.
  4. After the security light has gone off for the third time, turn the key off and remove it from ignition. The key is now programmed and all other keys have been erased.
  5. Insert key and start vehicle to test key.

To add a key when you already have a programmed key

  1. Insert an existing programmed working key into the ignition cylinder.
  2. Turn ignition to the ON position and back to OFF
  3. Remove the existing key and within 10 seconds insert the new key and turn it to the ON position.
  4. The security light will light up for 2 seconds to indicate successful Programming of the additional key. Remove the key from ignition.
  5. Insert key and start vehicle to test key.
