1996 - 1998 Ford, Lincoln, Mercury Key Programming Instructions (Select Models)
Instructions for Models: 1996 Ford Mustang, 1997-1998 Ford Expedition, 1998 Lincoln Navigator, 1997 Mercury Mystique, & 1997 Mercury Sable.
NOTE: If you have no existing, programmed, and cut keys for your vehicle you must have your key originated by a locksmith or dealership and cut for your vehicle prior to using these programming steps.
- Insert the new key into the ignition and turn it to the on position (as far as you can go without cranking the engine).
- The security light on the dash will flash for fifteen minutes.
- When the security light stops flashing, turn the ignition off and then back to the on position.
- The security light will flash for fifteen more minutes.
- When the security light stops flashing, turn the ignition off and then back to the on position.
- The security light will flash for fifteen more minutes.
- After the security light stops flashing the third time, turn the key to the off position.
- Turn the key to the on position and the security light should stop flashing indicating the new key has been programmed.
- Start vehicle to test key.
NOTE: If you already have at least one existing cut and programmed key and wish to program additional keys to your vehicle you can follow the instructions below.
- Insert the existing working key in the ignition and turn to the on position until the security light goes out on the dash then back to the off position.
- Within five seconds insert the new key in the ignition and turn to the on position.
- The security light will light up for 2 seconds to indicate successful programming.
- Turn the key to the off position.
- Start vehicle to test new key.
