IMPORTANT NOTE: If your Contour is a V6 LX model and built from 1997 through February 1998, you do not need any additional keys on hand to program one to your vehicle. However, the key you wish to program must be cut by a locksmith or automotive professional before taking any programming steps.
- Insert the new key into the ignition and turn it to the on position (as far as you can go without cranking the engine).
- The security light on the dash will flash for fifteen minutes.
- When the security light stops flashing, turn the ignition off and then back to the on position.
- The security light will flash for fifteen more minutes.
- When the security light stops flashing, turn the ignition off and then back to the on position.
- The security light will flash for fifteen more minutes.
- After the security light stops flashing the third time, turn the key to the off position.
- Turn the key to the on position and the security light should stop flashing indicating the new key has been programmed.
- Start vehicle to test key.
NOTE: If you already have a cut, programmed key you can use the following steps. Remember to program a key to your vehicle, the key must first be cut by a locksmith or automotive professional.
- Insert the existing working key in the ignition and turn to the on position then back to the off position.
- Within five seconds insert the new key in the ignition and turn to the on position.
- The security light will light up for two seconds to indicate successful programming.
- Turn the key to the off position.
- Start vehicle to test new key.
