1998 - 2009 Ford, Lincoln, Mercury Vehicle Key Programming Instructions (Select Models: See Attached List)
NOTE: Verify your vehicle's year, make, and model are on the attached list of vehicles before attempting these programming instructions.
NOTE: You cannot program keys to your vehicle unless you have two, working, programmed keys on hand. If you have one or no current keys, you must go to a locksmith or a dealer to program the key(s) to your vehicle. The key(s) will need to be cut by a professional before programming can occur.
- Insert an existing working key into the ignition cylinder.
- Turn the ignition cylinder to on (run) and back to off.
- Remove the existing working key and, within five seconds, insert a second working key and turn it on (run) then back off.
- Remove the second working key and insert the new key before ten seconds have elapsed and turn it to on (run).
- Leave it on for one second and turn it back off.
- The security light will light up for three seconds to indicate that the new key has been successfully programmed.
NOTE: In some cases this step is necessary. Once the key has been successfully programmed, do not remove the key from the ignition. The key must be left in the cylinder for 10 minutes before the programming procedure is complete. If you attempt to start the vehicle or remove the key before 10 minutes then you will have to restart the entire procedure from the beginning.
